What is a Netbook?

The easiest way to understand a Netbook is to think of it as a small laptop (Notebook) and then consider these other factors:

  • Features:

    • Usually included: WebCam, USB ports, WiFi, 3 cell battery
    • Usually NOT included: Optical (CD/DVD) drive, large capacity hard disk
    • Optional: Bluetooth, 6 cell battery
  • Netbooks are good for: Web browsing, basic word processing and spreadsheets, email, playing music, watching web videos, sorting pictures, basic editing of pictures etc.
  • Not so good for: Editing with Photoshop, heavy-duty Excel spreadsheets etc.
  • Advantages: Light, inexpensive, cool
  • Shortcomings: Small keyboard, small screen, not good at heavy duty apps, no built in DVD/CD drive
  • OS: Most common is Windows XP Home, followed by Linux, Windows XP Pro, Vista (Rare)

Top 10 things to consider when buying Netbooks!

  1. Screen size: 7-10". For most adults the recommended size is 10". For kids smaller sizes might be more cost effective.
  2. Keyboard: a touch typist will feel cramped on smaller keyboard, 10" have a reasonable keyboard. For kids smaller sizes are great.
  3. Bluetooth is not standard so if you need it check for it.
  4. SSD (Solid state Disk) is more expensive and limited in capacity (16-32GB) but more rugged. HDD are cheaper option and have larger capacity 60-320GB. HDD is recommended at this time.
  5. OS: Win XP home is adequate for most users. Vista will bog down the machine. Linux is frustrating for users who want to install familiar applications.
  6. Memory: 512GB is minimum, 1GB is recommended
  7. Battery: usual options are 3 or 6 cell. 6 cell has double the capacity and is recommended for user who will carry it. If it will be primarily used around the house, like a kitchen counter browsing machine, 3 cell is adequate.
  8. Wireless Networking: most models have wifi, but few have 3G modems. A USB wireless card slows performance much more than built-in wi-fi or 3G. -
  9. Accessories: External DVD/CD drive is handy to load some software, carry bag is nice to have but not essential
  10. Convertible (converts to tablet) and has touch screen is only useful for special applications. Not recommended for most users as it adds cost, bulk and reduces screen brightness.
